I am having a little problem with Visual Studio 2008 that only started after I had installed Office 2010. I found this interesting post on from Rinat Abdullin that was a complete match to the problem I am having.

Basically VS just bings at you whenever you click anywhere as if there is a model dialog open after opening and trying to edit an aspx file.

If you get this problem then there is a simple solution, well, one that worked for me. You need to run a repair on the “Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component” that is part of Office 2007.

image

You can find the setup in the following locations:

Windows 64bit

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Setup.exe

Windows 32bit

C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Setup.exe

My guess is that when Office 2010 is installed it has a new version of this component that has not yet been made compatible with Visual Studio 2008…

It was a frustrating couple of hours this morning to figure it out with the bulk of the time taken up with an ineffectual repair of Visual Studio 2008 SP1, ahh well, now I know…

It almost worked for me - I had to Remove the Office 12 Web Authoring Components rather than Repair. Then my VS2008 no longer freezed.

I've had to "repair" several times. This is totally crazy!

This fix didn´t really help - I could use the html text editor but not the html design view. And from time to time it was necessary to repair the above setup it again...

But here is the solution which helped on my computer:

Thank you - It's fantastic you took the time to post this solution. I can't imagine how long this would have taken to fix without your post.

Looks like I am having the issue as well. Unfortunetly, repairing doesn't solve the problem. I still having VS2008 issues. The only partial fix i have found was to uninstall the "Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component" and live with the Design mode of VS2008 not working. At least it doesn't lock up though.

This seems to have fixed my issue. I am seeing that some people are still having the issue? Is this a permanent fix, or one that we may have to run on a more regular basis? Thanks as it seems to be working for me right now.

Thanks so much ... I was going crazy trying to fix this.

I am interested in knowing what your troubleshooting steps were that lead you to this. I tried some logging, check event logs, etc, but just wasn't getting any clues.

Here's some keywords to help other find this excellent post: Visual Studio 2008, ws_disabled, spy++, vs2008, hangs, stops responding, freezes, stops responding to user input
